This year’s event will be Saturday, June 1 from 8:30-12:30. Locations are St. John’s Episcopal Church and School for the youth division, and Santa Margarita Catholic High School for the adult division. Silent auction items can be bid on at either location.

The enthusiasm and support from everyone that has supported this great event in past years motivates us to do this basketball tournament once again. For those of you that don’t know how this fundraising event got started, I’d like to share a little background that makes it so significant to our family. After losing our 26 year old son, Joey, on May 25, 2009, we received so much support from friends, family, and community. We knew we wanted to give back to other families in crisis, and heal by keeping Joey’s memory alive. Our other two sons came up with the idea of having a yearly basketball tournament in Joey’s honor and raise money for the Joseph Edward Campbell Benevolent fund. We hold the basketball tournament every year on or near the anniversary of Joey’s passing. The tournament has been a huge success with over 40 adult and youth teams participating, a silent auction, and court sponsorships.

We are a non-profit organization, and all of the money raised goes to families in crisis. Our 3on3forjoey.org website gives a glimpse of the action and all the details of the tournament. In some unexplainable way the tournament has become a celebration and an annual event that many now look forward to.

The combined efforts of everyone over the past 3 years has made it possible to help 33 families. We have helped families who have children with cancer, a family who lost everything in fire, a family who lost their 6 year old son to an accident, a young marine who lost a leg in Afghanistan, a young mother of three who is suffering from brain cancer, a family who lost their son in a car accident, and several families that are struggling with their child’s addiction and need help with rehabilitation or counseling. We also sent a donation from our organization to help families from Sandy Hook Elementary School. In addition we have two scholarships for students in Joey’s name.

Currently we are looking for items for baskets for our silent auction, seeking out court sponsors, and individuals or groups to sponsor a team so they can participate in the tournament. The team entrance fee is $100.00 which includes 3 guaranteed games, an individual bag for all players full of great stuff like a tournament t-shirt, Taco Bell gift cards, etc. All checks should be made out to 3 on 3 For Joey.

Last year some of you either teamed up with another staff member to sponsor a team, or supported this fundraiser individually. We were able to send 9 teams (36 students) from South Lake to the middle school division…it was awesome! These are kids that probably would not be able to go without a sponsorship. Any support is appreciated.
